Indonesia prepares community mining rules to curb illegal practices

Kota Padang (ANTARA) – Andre Rosiade, a member of the House of Representatives (DPR), stated that the government will soon prepare regulations for community mining permits (IPR) to prevent illegal mining practices in several regions.”President Prabowo is committed to expediting the issuance of community mining permits so that communities can mine legally and sustainably,” said Rosiade in Padang City on Monday. He made the statement after visiting an elderly person named Saudah, who was allegedly assaulted for resisting illegal mining activities in Pasaman District on January 1, 2026.Rosiade, also Deputy Chair of Commission VI, said the ESDM Minister will soon send a letter to the DPR to begin consultations on determining Mining Areas (WP), after which Community Mining Areas (WPR) within those areas will be designated.Next, the regional government will prepare WPR management documents and environmental management documents. Once all requirements are met, the governor has the authority to issue IPRs.Through the scheme, community cooperatives can manage up to 10 hectares of mining land, and a maximum of five hectares for individuals.”With IPR, the people of Pasaman and other regions can mine gold legally. The people will benefit, not the financiers and investors, and especially not outsiders,” Rosiade emphasized.Meanwhile, West Sumatra Governor Mahyeldi stated that the provincial government has mapped several areas where illegal mining activities have been detected for follow-up prevention and enforcement by security forces.Based on initial studies, illegal mining activities have been detected in several areas, including Pasaman, West Pasaman, Dharmasraya, South Solok, Solok, and Sijunjung Districts. The governor stated that illegal mining activities are a shared problem with widespread impacts. The activities are not only problematic from a legal perspective, but also concern the environment and public safety.
