Jakarta (ANTARA) – Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu'ti ensured that the rehabilitation of schools damaged by floods and landslides in Aceh will be completed in 2026.He emphasized that post-disaster school rehabilitation reflects the state’s commitment to guaranteeing children’s right to quality education.“The learning process must not stop. Schools with severe damage will be demolished and rebuilt on the same site using revitalization funds,” Mu'ti said in a statement on Thursday.He confirmed that the government has allocated Rp2.4 trillion (approximately US$142.9 million) for the recovery of disaster-affected educational units across Sumatra.According to disaster management data, as of January 15, 2026, the ministry recorded 171 educational units affected by the disasters, including 93 vocational high schools.So far, 99 school datasets have been verified and included in school revitalization cooperation agreements valued at Rp270 billion (around US$16 million).For special needs schools, the ministry recorded about 20 affected institutions, with 15 datasets verified and 13 agreements worth Rp3.98 billion signed.At the community learning center level, 58 units were affected, with seven datasets verified and two agreements processed, worth Rp198 million.Minister Mu’ti highlighted that the school revitalization program not only focuses on repairing classrooms but also includes the construction and upgrading of supporting facilities such as toilets, libraries, and laboratories.“These efforts aim to balance the availability of infrastructure with the number of students while simultaneously creating a school environment that fosters character development, a sense of safety, and confidence within the school community,” he said.Three provinces of Sumatra—Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra—were previously hit by heavy rainfall-triggered floods and landslides in late November 2025.According to National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) records, as of January 29, the disasters claimed 1,204 lives and displaced around 106,000 others.
