Indonesia’s Purbaya says no fresh talks yet on Whoosh train debt

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said he has not been involved in further discussions regarding the settlement of debt owed to China for the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway project, known as Whoosh.“I have not been summoned with regard to that matter,” he told reporters after attending the Economic Outlook 2026 event in Jakarta on Thursday.Purbaya said the most recent discussion concerned a plan to allocate part of the State Budget to partially repay the approximately 7 billion US dollars owed by project operator PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia-China (KCIC) to the China Development Bank.He added that confirmation on whether the plan has been finalized would only be possible after he is summoned to the Presidential Palace for further talks.Speaking at Gambir Station in Jakarta on February 10, Minister of State Secretariat Prasetyo Hadi said the government intends to use the State Budget to help settle the railway debt.He noted that Rosan Roeslani, chief executive officer (CEO) of Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund Danantara, has been appointed to lead negotiations and technical discussions on the settlement mechanism.Earlier last year, Hadi said President Prabowo Subianto had instructed government officials to identify the most feasible options and schemes to resolve the debt to China.During a limited meeting on October 29, the president instructed Purbaya, Roeslani, and Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto to “recalculate the details, including the option of extending the loan period,” Hadi said.Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono said on February 3 that restructuring the finances of PT KCIC to address the debt would require more time.“We will communicate with China in our efforts to find a solution. Our objective is to ensure that the strategic railway project endures and improves,” he said.In a statement issued on January 20, Yudhoyono also raised the possibility of establishing a national committee to strengthen cross-institutional synergy in managing the project.
