Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, is targeting the expansion of the Hajj Village project in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, by purchasing another plot of land 600 meters from the Grand Mosque. This expansion follows the acquisition of a hotel (Novotel Makkah) and real estate assets located within the Thakher City complex, 2.5 kilometers from the Grand Mosque.”Next, we will purchase land approximately 600 meters from the Grand Mosque,” CEO of Danantara, Rosan Roeslani, said during his presentation at the Indonesia Economic Outlook 2026 in Jakarta on Friday. He explained that the Hajj Village will be equipped with a tunnel. However, he did not specify which tunnel will connect it to the Mecca area.”There is a direct tunnel, and we have already purchased both the hotel and land in the Hajj Village,” Roeslani explained. He then mentioned Danantara's plan to construct a total of 13 buildings in the Hajj Village area to accommodate Indonesian Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.”This agreement was signed on December 14, 2025. We will build 13 towers in that area,” he pointed out.Previously, Danantara Indonesia reported on the progress of the development of the Hajj Complex in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, with the Thakher Complex as the initial foundation already underway. The Thakher Complex includes the Novotel Thakher Makkah, which is already operational on approximately 4.4 hectares of land located approximately 2-3 kilometers from the Grand Mosque. It will feature approximately 1,461 rooms across three towers, as well as approximately 14 plots of land planned for further development, including commercial and retail areas.”This area is gradually designed to expand to around 6,000 rooms with an estimated capacity of approximately 22,000 pilgrims, or around 10 percent of the total number of Indonesian Hajj pilgrims each year,” the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) of Danantara, Pandu Sjahrir, remarked.
