Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto encouraged a major United States company to expand its investment in medical equipment production in Indonesia.Speaking at the Gala Iftar Dinner Business Summit in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday evening, Prabowo said multinational firm General Electric (GE) has opportunities to increase cooperation following the establishment of 10 new universities focused on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and medicine.”I believe there are opportunities for the United States. General Electric is already producing medical equipment in Indonesia, and we hope it will expand its production,” he said in an audio statement received in Jakarta on Thursday.Addressing US business leaders, Prabowo highlighted Indonesia's shortage of around 140,000 doctors, noting that only about 10,000 doctors graduate annually.”At that rate, it would take 14 years to close the gap unless we introduce new measures. That is why we established 10 new universities specializing in STEM and medicine,” he stated.During a previous state visit to the United Kingdom, Prabowo initiated a framework for cooperation in higher education, including the development of new universities and lecturer exchange programs. He said the expansion of medical education institutions and graduates would open broader opportunities for collaboration with GE, particularly in medical equipment manufacturing.Prabowo also expressed support for increased investment, saying the government has worked to address bureaucratic obstacles raised by investors.”There were bureaucratic challenges, but we moved quickly to resolve them. I have also received feedback from several companies regarding the need to accelerate solutions,” he added.
