Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Tourism Ministry said domestic travel will be a key driver of economic activity during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, as millions of people are expected to travel across the country.Deputy for Marketing Ni Made Ayu Marthini said the holiday period typically triggers large-scale, simultaneous travel, generating significant economic circulation.“This holiday period marks a massive movement of domestic tourists. We believe this will create a substantial economic impact,” she said during an online discussion on Tuesday. She noted that travel surges during Eid involve both homecoming travelers and leisure tourists, boosting various sectors of the economy. The increase in mobility is expected to support micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and drive higher consumer spending compared with normal periods. To capture these opportunities, the ministry is intensifying its “Proud to Travel in Indonesia” campaign, known as BBWI.The government has also introduced transportation ticket discounts to encourage more trips and stimulate tourism demand. The ministry is urging all stakeholders to collaborate to ensure safe, smooth and comfortable travel during the holiday season. This includes working with online travel platforms to improve services and partnering with tourism associations to offer attractive travel packages.“We hope that Indonesians who usually travel abroad during this period will choose to vacation domestically instead,” Marthini said. She added that the effort aligns with the government’s broader strategy to strengthen the domestic tourism market.Previously, Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said the Eid holiday could serve as a major economic catalyst due to the high volume of domestic travel.Data from the Transportation Ministry show that 143.91 million people are projected to travel during this year’s Eid period. The figure represents a 6.92 percent decline from 154.62 million recorded in 2025.Despite the slight drop, travel levels remain significant and are expected to sustain economic activity. The Tourism Ministry also reported that foreign tourist arrivals during the 2025 Eid holiday reached 1,164,539, an increase of 9.15 percent from the previous year.Average spending per foreign visitor was recorded at US$1,267.Meanwhile, domestic tourists spent an average of about Rp1.2 million, or roughly US$70, per person during the same period.
