Indonesia implements Friday WFH for civil servants to cut energy use

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian government has officially implemented a Friday work-from-home (WFH) policy for civil servants as part of a broader push for national energy efficiency.Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga  Hart  arto stated that the policy will take effect on April 1, 2026, and will be evaluated after two months.”The implementation of work-from-home for civil servants at both central and regional government institutions is set at one working day per week, specifically every Friday,” he said during a virtual press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday.In addition to the public sector, the Indonesian government is also encouraging private companies to  adopts  WFH arrangements.The guidelines will be issued via a circular from the Minister of Manpower, while taking into account the specific characteristics and requirements of each business sector.However, Minister Hartarto specified that several sectors are exempt from this WFH policy. These include public service sectors, such as healthcare, security, and sanitation, as well as strategic sectors including industry, energy, water, basic commodities, food and beverages, trade, transportation, logistics, and finance.In the education sector, teaching and learning activities for primary through secondary levels will continue to  be conducted face-to-face without restrictions on activities.Meanwhile, for higher education—specifically for students in their fourth semester and above—implementation will follow the policies set by the relevant ministry.Furthermore, as part of promoting mobility efficiency, the government is limiting the use of official vehicles by 50 percent, with exceptions for operational purposes and electric vehicles.In addition, domestic official travel is being cut by 50 percent, while international official travel is being reduced by 70 percent.According to the minister, the WFH policy could potentially save the state budget Rp6.2 trillion (approximately US$365 million) in fuel compensation. Meanwhile, the total potential savings from public fuel consumption are projected to reach Rp59 trillion.
