RI Govt aims to complete 100 Red-and-White fishermen villages by May

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono says 100 Red-and-White Fishermen Villages (KNMP) are targeted for completion by the end of May 2026.Trenggono made the announcement after a limited meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace Complex on Tuesday.He stated that the government is accelerating the KNMP development as part of strengthening the national coastal economy.The Red and White Fishermen Villages (KNMP) program aims to transform fishermen villages into modern, productive, and competitive hubs by improving fishermen’s welfare through facility upgrades and better market access.The KNMP is also simultaneously conducting social engineering through human capital development, cooperative strengthening, and entrepreneurship, including certification, standardization, and licensing.He explained that the Ministry has so far built 100 fishermen villages in two phases, with 65 in the first phase and 35 in the second.“We have built 100 sites, 65 in the first phase, 35 in the second, totaling 100. All are expected to be completed by the end of May,” he said.In addition to physical development, the government is also addressing human resource management in the fishermen village areas.Minister Trenggono emphasized that community readiness and management capacity are crucial for the program’s sustainability.“The crew and readiness of the fishermen villages are also important. This was one of the topics discussed with the President,” he said.Looking ahead, the government has planned to develop 1,000 additional fishermen villages in 2026, to be implemented in parallel.The extended program will focus on eastern Indonesia to accelerate equitable maritime economic development and improve the welfare of coastal communities.“Next, the 1,000 villages will be worked on in parallel in 2026, with a focus on eastern Indonesia,” Trenggono said.
