Meta complies with Indonesia’s restrictions on access for children

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid welcomed the good intent shown by technology giant Meta to restrict children's access to its social media platforms. This move aligns with the Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 regarding Electronic System Governance for Child Protection (PP Tunas).”Today, we are very pleased to express our appreciation to Meta, which operates Instagram, Facebook, and Threads,” she said at the office of the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs in Jakarta on Thursday. She noted that, after a hearing held earlier on Monday, Meta showed compliance to adjust their products, features, and services in accordance with Indonesian law.In this regard, she explained that Meta has updated its Community Standards for its social media platforms.Previously, Facebook, Instagram, and Threads were accessible to users aged 13 and older. Following the implementation of the government regulation, the minimum age to access these platforms in Indonesia has been raised to 16 starting from Thursday.Meta is also committed to the deactivation of accounts belonging to users under 16, with the process being carried out gradually, given the large number of its users in Indonesia, which exceeds 100 million. The phased rollout of this access restriction is expected to be completed by Friday (April 10).According to Hafid, Meta's commitment to compliance proves that technical hurdles are no excuse for failing to follow the regulation.”This is a matter of will and good faith from major platforms to comply with Indonesia's law,” she stressed.PP Tunas, which came into effect on March 28, 2026, restricts children's access to digital platforms, including those categorized as high-risk, such as Instagram, Facebook, Threads, X, Bigo Live, YouTube, TikTok, and Roblox. As of Thursday at 5:50 p.m., Instagram, Facebook, Threads, X, and Bigo Live have fully complied with the regulation, while TikTok and Roblox are considered to be in partial compliance. However, Google, which operates YouTube, is noted as having yet to show a commitment to complying with the regulation.
