Indonesia warns Google after YouTube fails child safety standards

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia has issued a warning to Google, the owner of YouTube, for failing to comply with new child protection regulations governing digital platforms. Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid said Thursday that the government issued a formal warning after an inspection on April 7 found YouTube had not met compliance obligations under Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025, known as PP Tunas. “It was found that YouTube has not fulfilled its compliance obligations and has not stated its intention to comply with applicable laws in the near future,” Hafid said. PP Tunas, which came into effect on March 28, 2026, requires platforms to implement strict governance measures to protect minors online. Its implementing regulation, Ministerial Regulation No. 9 of 2026, sets out sanctions ranging from warning letters to temporary access suspension and even termination of access. Google has now received a warning letter from the Director General of Digital Space Supervision. “Our sanctions are gradual, while still hoping for a change in attitude from Google, and today we issued a warning letter,” Hafid said. The government contrasted Google’s non-compliance with Meta, which has fully adhered to the regulation by restricting Instagram, Facebook, and Threads to users aged 16 and above.Other platforms in compliance include X and Bigo Live. PP Tunas initially targeted eight major platforms: Instagram, Facebook, Threads, X, Bigo Live, YouTube, TikTok, and Roblox.
