Whoosh debt policy ready, awaiting official announcement: Minister

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa confirmed that the government has devised a definitive policy to settle the Chinese debt tied to the Whoosh Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train, focusing on the financial restructuring of operator PT KCIC.Speaking at a symposium in Jakarta on Wednesday, he emphasized that discussions on the debt had concluded, with the outcome pending a government announcement. He noted that he had conveyed the progress to the Chinese government, citing the railway project’s pivotal role in bilateral ties.”I have recently met with China’s finance minister, knowing that this issue is closely tied to the long-term relations between Indonesia and China. I informed the Chinese finance minister that we have decided on a policy, which will be announced,” Purbaya remarked. The state treasurer, however, refrained from elaborating further on the decision, pointing instead to Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) as the official set to disclose it.”It will be announced by Mr. AHY. I do not see myself in the capacity to talk much about this now,” he said, while assuring the media that the debt settlement plan is complete.Furthermore, he could not confirm whether Chinese representatives would be present during the policy’s official announcement.Earlier, Purbaya highlighted financial challenges faced by PT KCIC, particularly cost overruns in the Whoosh railway project, which he attributed partly to weak cross-institutional coordination.”This is basically a good project. However, due to a lack of monitoring, no institutions can step in when problems arise. As a result, we face tens of trillions of rupiah in cost overruns,” he explained. In this regard, he stressed that restructuring is essential to sustain the project, while underscoring the need for a fair burden-sharing arrangement between Indonesia and China.
