Manpower Minister pushes for social security for informal workers

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian Manpower Minister Yassierli emphasized that the expansion of social security must reach workers in the informal sector. This expansion targets domestic workers and ride hailing drivers along with couriers and those in the fisheries and plantation sectors. In a statement in Jakarta on Friday he underlined that social protection is a fundamental right for every worker and must be accessible without exception.“Our core principle is that every citizen has the right to employment and a decent living. This serves as the foundation for all of our policies,” Yassierli said. The minister noted that the current challenge is ensuring that informal workers can be integrated into a system previously dominated by the formal sector. To address this the Ministry of Manpower is pushing for stronger regulations for digital economy workers and other vulnerable groups. These regulations aim to ensure that these workers receive social security coverage as part of the responsibilities of their employers.Furthermore the ministry is encouraging the inclusion of domestic workers in the national system through regulatory reinforcement. This effort ensures that domestic staff are recognized as workers and granted their legal right to occupational protection.”The main focus is expanding participation and providing the maximum benefits to workers,” he remarked. The minister also called on all parties to strengthen the integration of data as a basis for creating policies that are more precisely targeted.Integrated data is deemed essential for anticipating workplace accidents and occupational diseases while ensuring the sustainability of social security funds.Meanwhile the President Director of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan Syaiful Hidayat affirmed that providing protection to all workers remains a top priority. He emphasized that the state run insurance provider is committed to serving both the formal and informal sectors to ensure national coverage. The agency will continue to simplify registration processes to encourage more independent and gig economy workers to join the program.
