Indonesia forms task force for national park financing

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia has set up a task force to develop innovative financing for national park management to strengthen biodiversity conservation and improve community welfare, officials said on Wednesday.Presidential Special Envoy for Climate Change and Energy and Task Force Chair Hashim Djojohadikusumo said resource mobilization must be optimized to protect ecosystems that sustain future generations, stressing the initiative is not for commercialization.”We emphasize that this conservation financing innovation is not for commercialization. Ecology before tourism. Tourism supports ecology,” he said.Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni said the government will begin with pilot projects in 13 national parks, along with key conservation areas including the Peusangan Landscape and Bukit 30 Landscape. He said the task force would adopt a dual-track strategy, combining regulatory reforms, institutional strengthening, and policy design with efforts to mobilize funding through partnerships and community-based management.”We continue to explore mechanisms, including carbon trading. Blended finance involving philanthropy, private sector investment, and other funding sources,” Antoni said.Beyond financing, the government is also focusing on strengthening field personnel capacity, including forest rangers, ecosystem controllers, and forestry extension workers.Technology-based monitoring systems will be expanded to ensure transparency and accountability in conservation area management.WWF Indonesia CEO Aditya Bayunanda said the initiative could unlock large-scale philanthropic and multilateral public funding to support habitat protection for Indonesia’s iconic species.”This is expected to support the government’s plan to secure alternative resources for financing habitats of iconic species in Indonesia,” he said.
