Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto said the government aims to improve the welfare of 6 million fishermen through the development of 1,386 fishing villages this year.”For the first time in Indonesia's history, fishermen are being taken care of,” he said at the 2026 May Day event at the National Monument in Jakarta on Friday.Prabowo added that 1,500 fishing villages will be developed annually over the next four years.He said the program is expected to improve the welfare of more than 20 million people, including fishermen and their families.Under the program, the government will provide facilities such as ice factories to help maintain the quality of fish catches.”Many fishermen have long gone to sea without ice. Now we will build ice factories in every fishing village and provide boats for them,” he said.Prabowo said he had signed Presidential Regulation No. 25 of 2026 on the ratification of International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 188 to ensure protection for fishing boat crews.He also instructed the manpower and law ministers to finalize the manpower bill with parliament.”If possible, it should be completed this year, and the law must serve the interests of workers,” Prabowo said.He added that his administration has taken steps to improve workers' welfare, including raising minimum wages, expanding subsidized housing quotas, and providing Eid al-Fitr bonuses for drivers and couriers.
