Labuan Bajo, E Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA) – The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has urged the public to remain vigilant against potential extreme weather conditions following the upgrade of tropical disturbance 93W into a tropical cyclone in the Pacific Ocean. In a statement here on Thursday, BMKG forecaster Ranika Dwi Asti explained that the cyclone, situated north of Papua New Guinea, was maintaining maximum wind speeds of 35 knots and a minimum atmospheric pressure of 1,000 hPa.“The cyclone is moving westward over the next 24 hours, forming a convergence area over the Pacific Ocean. This condition indirectly increases the potential for rain cloud formation in surrounding areas,” she remarked.Apart from the cyclone in the Pacific, BMKG also detected cyclonic circulation over the Natuna Sea and the Philippine Sea extending from West Kalimantan.Convergence areas were also observed in various locations, ranging from South Sumatra to the southern waters of Bangka Belitung, the southern coast of Banten, the Indian Ocean west of Lampung, as well as the Banda Sea and Arafura Sea.The combination of these atmospheric dynamics has increased the potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall in several provinces.“The public should remain alert for the potential of heavy to very heavy rainfall, especially in Bangka Belitung, West Java, Central Kalimantan, West Sulawesi, and Maluku,” she stated.BMKG’s Deputy for Public Meteorology reported that thunderstorms were forecast to hit several major cities in western Indonesia, including Tanjung Pinang, Jambi, Bandar Lampung, Pontianak, Banjarmasin, and Tanjung Selor.Meanwhile, Jakarta, Serang, and Surabaya were expected to experience cloudy to overcast conditions. In eastern Indonesia, moderate rainfall was forecast in Mamuju. Light rain was expected in Mataram, Makassar, Kendari, Gorontalo, Ternate, Ambon, and Merauke, while Denpasar, Kupang, and Jayapura were predicted to see cloudy weather conditions.
