MPR Deputy Speaker calls for tougher child protection policies

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Lestari Moerdijat stated that strengthening prevention efforts and law enforcement must be carried out simultaneously to improve the effectiveness of child protection in Indonesia.According to her, recent child abuse cases across various regions indicate that the national protection system still has significant loopholes, ranging from supervision to victim handling.”Strengthening prevention and law enforcement must go hand in hand. There should be no room for systemic violence against children,” she stressed in a statement in Jakarta on Friday.Moerdijat highlighted several cases that have recently gained public attention, such as the alleged abuse at a daycare in Yogyakarta and the suspected sexual abuse of students at an Islamic boarding school in Pati, Central Java. She argued that these cases must serve as an alarm for all stakeholders to evaluate the effectiveness of existing policies. The Deputy Speaker called for a comprehensive evaluation of all child-related institutions to ensure adequate systems for violence prevention are in place.Furthermore, she urged law enforcement to prioritize a holistic approach to victim protection, covering both psychological support and physical safety. She also urged the government to bolster campaigns aimed at breaking the cycle of violence through education and increased community awareness.Moerdijat maintained that protection efforts cannot rely solely on reactive law enforcement but must be accompanied by proactive, sustained preventive measures.Strengthening prevention, enforcement, and political support is deemed essential to creating a safe environment for children. With these steps in place, Moerdijat expressed optimism that Indonesia can bolster child protection nationwide while fostering a healthy and competitive younger generation.
