Jakarta (ANTARA) – Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Lestari Moerdijat called on all parties to strengthen their commitment to fulfilling the rights of people with disabilities. In a statement issued in Jakarta on Thursday, she emphasized that protecting and fulfilling the rights of marginalized groups is mandated by the 1945 Constitution.“The fulfillment of the rights of people with disabilities in all aspects of social life must be carried out with full commitment, as it is mandated by both the law and the Constitution,” she stated.Moerdijat noted that disability issues have become an important part of the national legislative agenda. She cited data from the National Commission for Disabilities showing that 38 out of the 67 bills prioritized under the 2026 National Legislation Program are related to disability issues. She expressed hope that people with disabilities would be actively involved in the deliberation and drafting of the proposed legislation.According to Moerdijat, data indicates that the fulfillment of basic rights for people with disabilities across various sectors still requires significant improvement.Referring to data from Statistics Indonesia, she said only 2.8 percent of the 17.9 million people with disabilities in Indonesia have completed higher education.“In the employment sector, around 70 percent of working people with disabilities are employed in the informal sector, which leaves them in vulnerable positions and without adequate protection,” she remarked. She stressed that efforts to achieve inclusive development for people with disabilities cannot be carried out partially or independently.Moerdijat also called for the acceleration of disability-related policies at the regional level, including the harmonization and issuance of inclusive regional regulations across all provinces, districts, and cities. In addition, she urged the strengthening of inclusive public services to anticipate a growing number of people with disabilities in the future.Furthermore, she invited the central government, regional administrations, the legislature, the private sector, and the public to jointly build a more effective system of services and protection for people with disabilities.Related news: Ministry reaffirms commitment to upholding labor rights of disabledRelated news: MPR presses for stronger protection for persons with disabilities
