Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia is accelerating development of a domestic electric bus industry through higher local-content requirements and wider adoption of battery-powered public transportation, an Industry Ministry official said Wednesday.Mahardi Tunggul Wicaksono said Indonesia’s automotive industry was prepared to support battery electric vehicle production, including electric buses and trucks.“Indonesia currently has nine domestic manufacturers producing electric buses and trucks. We are capable of meeting logistics and special-purpose vehicle demand,” Wicaksono said at the INAPA 2026 and Busworld Southeast Asia 2026 exhibitions in Jakarta. He said several locally produced electric buses had achieved domestic component, or TKDN, levels exceeding 40 percent, including in the bodywork segment. The ministry is revising regulations governing key TKDN components to further increase local content in Indonesia’s electric vehicle industry.According to Wicaksono, the revised rules will strengthen implementation of existing local-content requirements across the automotive sector.“We are revising the main TKDN component regulations together with bodywork industry players, and we expect the regulation to be issued soon,” he said. The government will also continue offering TKDN-based incentives for electric vehicles to support domestic manufacturing and accelerate Indonesia’s clean-energy transition.Indonesia’s minimum TKDN target for domestically produced electric vehicles is set at 40 percent by 2026 under the national electric vehicle development roadmap, Wicaksono said.Several regional governments have also begun gradually shifting public transportation fleets to electric buses, signaling broader support for transport electrification.Wicaksono said the transition would help create a more environmentally friendly and efficient transportation system nationwide.Indonesia’s automotive industry currently includes 41 four-wheeled vehicle manufacturers with annual production capacity of 2.5 million units. The sector has attracted Rp163 trillion, or about US$9.2 billion, in investment and employs more than 69,000 workers directly, he added.
