Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia's National Food Agency (Bapanas) said rice prices under the government's Food Price and Supply Stabilization (SPHP) program will remain unchanged despite the rupiah's weakening against the US dollar.”The government can ensure that fluctuations in the US dollar exchange rate will not affect SPHP rice prices,” Bapanas SPHP Director Maino Dwi Hartono said on Thursday. He said the policy reflects the government's commitment under President Prabowo Subianto to maintain people's purchasing power, similar to its decision not to raise subsidized fuel prices.”This way, people can stay calm,” he said.He also assured that state-run logistics company Bulog would continue maintaining the quality of SPHP rice.”Exchange rate fluctuations can affect many sectors, including food. However, because SPHP rice is a government program, there have been no changes so far, including in retail prices,” he added.SPHP rice is priced at Rp12,500 (around US$0.70) per kilogram across Java, Lampung, South Sumatra, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, and Sulawesi. The price is set at Rp13,100 per kilogram in other Sumatran regions, East Nusa Tenggara, and Kalimantan, while consumers in Maluku and Papua pay Rp13,500 per kilogram.Maino said Bapanas has allocated Rp4.97 trillion (around US$278.5 million) for the 2026 SPHP program, enough to subsidize around 828,000 tonnes of rice.Under new rules, consumers may purchase up to five 5-kilogram packages of SPHP rice, while purchases of 2-kilogram packages are limited to two packs.Reselling subsidized SPHP rice is prohibited, he added.Maino said the purchase limits were designed to accommodate small food vendors such as fried rice and rice stall sellers that rely on SPHP rice supplies. The government has also increased the purchase limit for Bulog partners from 2 tonnes to 5 tonnes in 2026.He said the measure aims to improve distribution, ensure steady market supplies, and make it easier for merchants to obtain stock.Earlier, Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said Indonesia had achieved rice self-sufficiency and warned against market manipulation practices that distort prices.Government rice reserves managed by Bulog currently stand at 5.3 million tonnes, the highest level in Indonesia's history, supporting market stabilization efforts including the SPHP program.
