RI seeks alternatives routes to cut internet reliance on Singapore

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia is moving to bolster its digital sovereignty by establishing alternative network routes, aiming to break its near-total reliance on Singapore, which currently handles 90 percent of the archipelago's international internet traffic. The Communication and Digital Affairs Ministry warned that this severe over-dependence creates a critical bottleneck, threatening Indonesia's ambitions to expand its digital economy and transition into artificial intelligence (AI).”Honestly, 90 percent of our traffic now depends on Singapore,” Denny Setiawan, the ministry’s Director of Strategy and Policy for Digital Infrastructure, said during the Selular Award 2026 on Monday.Denny likened the current network architecture to funneling all of the nation's digital resources through a single point of failure. With Indonesia’s internet demand skyrocketing due to data-heavy services and rapid AI development, experts warn that relying on a solitary international hub leaves the country's digital ecosystem highly vulnerable to infrastructural risks and disruptions. To build systemic resilience, Jakarta is aggressively pushing to diversify its network routes. The strategy involves mapping and deploying an intricate web of alternative subsea and terrestrial cables across Indonesia's vast archipelago of more than 17,000 islands.”We are trying to align the data center roadmap, sea cables, and land cables—all on the same frequency,” Denny explained, adding that network capacity must scale in tandem with the physical infrastructure hosting these technologies. While Indonesia holds massive potential to become the primary hub for digital economic growth in Southeast Asia, officials emphasize that achieving that status hinges on establishing reliable, decentralized connectivity capable of reaching every corner of the country.
