Indonesia targets wushu gold at Asian Games, prepares young athletes

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian Wushu Association (PBWI) chairman Airlangga Hartarto has targeted a gold medal for Indonesia at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, vowing to maintain the nation's strong championship tradition in the martial art.Airlangga, who was inaugurated for the 2026–2030 term on Friday, said the target remains one of the federation's main priorities given Indonesia's strong track record in the sport at previous Asian Games. “We strongly hope that at the Asian Games, wushu can also contribute a gold medal because in several previous Asian Games, wushu has always participated and secured gold,” he said after the inauguration ceremony in Jakarta.Alongside the Asian Games target, Airlangga said the federation has begun preparing a long-term athlete development program as part of regeneration efforts. “In the coming period, we are also preparing young athletes should wushu be contested at the Olympics,” he added. According to Airlangga, the regeneration program has been encouraged by the achievements at the recent World Junior Championships in Tianjin, China, where Indonesian athletes collected 29 medals and finished third behind Hong Kong and China. “This is very significant because these athletes will later back up the senior athletes,” he said.Airlangga acknowledged that athlete regeneration remains a major challenge as several key national team members have retired from competition, adding that young athletes must quickly adapt and fill positions left vacant by senior competitors.”Experience is very important, as well as mentality and motivation. That is our challenge,” he said. Meanwhile, Central National Sports Committee (KONI) chairman Marciano Norman praised the achievements of Indonesian wushu athletes, including their overall title at the 2025 SEA Games. “It is my great hope that wushu will again become a sport that contributes gold medals for Indonesia and makes us proud through its achievements,” he said.
