Jakarta (ANTARA) – State electricity company PT PLN (Persero) said Indonesia currently has an annual surplus of 125 tons of unused hydrogen, presenting an untapped opportunity for the domestic clean transportation sector.”We produce 200 tons, of which 75 tons are used. The remaining 125 tons are idle,” PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said during the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit & Exhibition 2026 in Jakarta on Tuesday (July 21).Darmawan explained that hydrogen is generated across PLN's power plant facilities, where it is primarily used as a coolant for power generators. However, internal plant operations require only 75 tons annually, leaving a substantial excess supply.To capitalize on the surplus, PLN has partnered with state energy firm PT Pertamina to construct Hydrogen Refueling Stations (HRS). Although the infrastructure is already operational, vehicle adoption remains the primary hurdle.”The Hydrogen Refueling Station is already operational and ready for use. However, the cars are not yet available,” Darmawan noted.To drive adoption, Darmawan urged Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Minister Bahlil Lahadalia to coordinate with Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung regarding the potential integration of hydrogen-powered buses into the TransJakarta public transit system.He revealed that PLN has already initiated discussions with commercial vehicle manufacturers from Japan, Germany and China to procure hydrogen-powered buses.Should the government decide to utilize hydrogen for public transit, PLN and Pertamina stand ready to jointly procure and deploy the vehicle fleet.”Pertamina and PLN will jointly provide the buses. The hydrogen buses will then bear the logos of ESDM, PLN and Pertamina. We are collaborating to develop hydrogen-based transportation,” Darmawan said.
