Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia is strengthening its coconut industry to boost the commodity's added value and competitiveness, aiming to become a leading exporter of downstream coconut products.”We do not only aim to have net exports, but also strive to become the main exporter of coconut-based products and their derivatives, enabling us to generate the highest possible added value,” National Development Planning Minister Rachmat Pambudy stated during a webinar on Wednesday. He noted that in the 2025–2045 National Long-Term Development Plan, the coconut is designated as a national strategic commodity expected to bolster the country's industrial structure. To support this goal, the government has formulated the 2025–2045 Coconut Downstreaming Roadmap.Pambudy stated that the government is supporting the development of the national coconut industry through various financing, research, innovation, standardization, and incentive schemes. The government is also working to expand production capacity, strengthen human resources, secure energy sources, and improve supply chains to enhance the global competitiveness of the nation's coconut sector. In the medium term, downstreaming efforts will focus on increasing productivity, diversifying products, and boosting the sustainable utilization of the coconut industry, he added.Pambudy emphasized the importance of these measures, considering that Indonesia is the world's second-largest coconut producer after the Philippines.Meanwhile, global demand for coconut-based products is expected to continue rising across various sectors, including food and beverages, health, cosmetics, textiles, and biofuels.According to data compiled by the Indonesian Coconut Processing Industry Association (HIPKI), national coconut production in 2025 reached an estimated 15 billion nuts, or about 23 percent of total global production.Around 9 billion nuts, or 60 percent of domestic coconut production, were processed into various derivative products such as copra, desiccated coconut, and coconut milk.Meanwhile, approximately 4 billion nuts, or 26.7 percent of national production, were exported in raw and whole form. The data also estimated that the export value of Indonesia's coconut industry reached US$2.48 billion last year.
