Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian government has emphasized that its action against Palestinian national Abdul Karim Raed Miqdad was based on a legitimate red notice request from the Cypriot authority while clarifying that Karim is not an activist nor a preacher.”There are growing claims that the Indonesian government arrested and deported a Palestinian cleric,” Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra stated during a press conference on Wednesday.Yusril said that the government has communicated with the Palestinian Embassy in Jakarta to verify Karim's identity and background.Based on the available data and documents, Abdul Karim (41) is a businessman instead of an activist for Palestine or a Muslim preacher, he said.Karim, says Yusril, has stayed in Indonesia for the past three years and is married with children.”The individual was known to travel overseas often. No evidence that the individual is a humanitarian activist in the Gaza Strip, as some members of the public believe,” Yusril stated.He added that if Karim is really a Muslim preacher, he would likely have been known to the Indonesian public through his participation in public preaching activities.Karim was arrested in Tangerang, Banten, on Thursday (July 16) based on an Interpol red notice from Cypriot authorities. He was deported to Cyprus on Friday (July 17).Yusril confirmed that Karim, who has been named a suspect for a terrorism offense by the Cypriot authorities, will stand trial in Cyprus and will not be extradited to a third country.”After meeting the Cypriot ambassador, Indonesia's Foreign Ministry will issue an official diplomatic notification to the Cypriot government for reassurance that they will not deport the individual to a third country,” he said.
