Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia ratified defense cooperation agreements with Turkiye and Malaysia on Tuesday, giving the partnerships stronger legal footing for implementation, Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas said Wednesday.Indonesia has maintained defense partnerships with both countries based on equality and mutual benefit, Agtas said in a statement in Jakarta.The cooperation covers capacity building, information sharing and efforts to strengthen Indonesia’s defense industry, he said.Indonesia signed a defense cooperation agreement with Turkiye in Bali on Nov. 14, 2022, and a memorandum of understanding with Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur on Aug. 9, 2022.The ratifications comply with Article 10(a) of Law No. 24 of 2000, which requires legislative approval for international agreements on politics, peace, defense and national security, Agtas said.The government and House of Representatives (DPR), approved the two ratification bills during Tuesday’s plenary session in Jakarta.Agtas thanked DPR leaders and lawmakers for facilitating the legislation of the defense cooperation agreements.Earlier, DPR Commission I Deputy Chairman Anton Sukartono Suratto said all eight parliamentary factions had approved the two bills.DPR Speaker Puan Maharani marked the consensus by striking the gavel during the plenary session, formally passing the bills into law.Suratto said deeper defense ties with Turkiye and Malaysia are strategically important for Indonesia to support geopolitical stability, acquire advanced defense technology and strengthen military personnel capabilities.“Commission I has consistently emphasized the importance of oversight and budgetary functions. The enactment of these laws requires measurable, effective and sustainable budget support,” Suratto said.
