Jakarta (ANTARA) – A shallow magnitude 5.5 inland earthquake struck Aceh's Gayo Lues Regency on Wednesday morning, sending strong tremors across the province and into neighboring North Sumatra.The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) urged the public to remain calm, stay clear of damaged or cracked structures, and ignore unverified rumors.BMKG Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis Wijayanto said the quake hit at 11:18 a.m. local time (0418 GMT) at a depth of 9 kilometers, centered 36 kilometers northeast of Gayo Lues.”Based on the location of its epicenter and depth, this was a shallow earthquake triggered by activity along the Oreng Fault,” Wijayanto said, adding that source mechanism analysis indicated a strike-slip movement.The agency confirmed the inland quake posed no tsunami threat.The strongest shaking was felt in Gayo Lues at an intensity of V on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale—strong enough to be felt by nearly all residents, shatter glassware, and cause large objects to sway.Moderate tremors measuring IV MMI were reported across several Aceh districts, including Southwest Aceh, Southeast Aceh, North Aceh, Lhokseumawe, East Aceh, Bener Meriah, and Central Aceh. Weaker tremors (II to III MMI) were felt in Pidie, as well as the North Sumatran cities of Medan and Sibolga.By 11:30 a.m., BMKG had recorded one magnitude 3.8 foreshock and two aftershocks, the largest measuring magnitude 4.3.
