Batam (ANTARA) – Indonesian authorities have seized 2.6 tons of liquid methamphetamine from a Tanzanian-flagged vessel in Riau waters during a joint operation by narcotics, customs, and police officers, officials said Tuesday.Director of Enforcement of The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) Brigadier General Roy Hardi Siahaan said on Tuesday (Aug. 18) that the operation stemmed from intelligence regarding narcotics being transported from Sarawak, Malaysia, into Indonesian waters.”We formed a joint operation involving the BNN, Customs, and the Riau Islands Regional Police. We intercepted the vessel on August 17 and towed it for inspection,” Siahaan said in a statement.According to Siahaan, the Tanzanian-flagged ship was named the MV Ocean Porter, though initial investigations revealed it previously operated under the name MV Rain Maker. The MV Ocean Porter was towed to the Karimun Customs Base Port in the Riau Islands for a detailed search using sniffer dogs (K9), backscatter scanners, TruNarc analyzers, and field drug-testing kits.Officers discovered a liquid suspected to be methamphetamine stored inside eight drums and the vessel’s water tank.”We found 2.6 tons of Class I narcotics in the form of liquid methamphetamine. We are conducting further investigations,” Siahaan noted.Meanwhile, Head of Riau Islands Customs and Excise Sodikin said the ship was also carrying additional illicit cargo.”A 40-foot container containing untaxed cigarettes, suspected to have originated from China, was also found,” Sodikin said. The container held 157 master cases of cigarettes, which officers are continuing to inspect and trace. In addition to the contraband, authorities detained 10 crew members aboard the MV Ocean Porter, all of whom are Myanmar nationals. The BNN, Customs, and the Riau Islands Regional Police are continuing to inspect the ship and interrogate the crew to dismantle the broader smuggling network.
