Marsinah\’s hero title not linked to murder probe: Indonesian govt

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian government has said that the awarding of the National Hero title to Marsinah is unrelated to the reinvestigation of her 1993 murder.State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi made the statement after the National Hero Award Ceremony at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday, when asked whether the government would reopen the investigation into the case.”I don’t think it’s related. As previously stated, today we are recognizing the contributions of prominent figures, especially our predecessors,” he said.He explained that the award was granted based on Marsinah’s contributions and exemplary struggle as a symbol of workers’ courage in fighting for justice.Hadi urged the public to focus on the values of Marsinah’s struggle rather than past controversies.”Let’s look forward together. Every generation has its time, every era has its people, its achievements, its strength, its shortcomings,” he said.Marsinah’s case occurred in 1993 in Sidoarjo, East Java, when workers at PT Catur Putra Surya went on strike to demand a wage increase in line with government standards. On May 5, 1993, after several workers were detained at the Sidoarjo Military District Command, Marsinah was last seen visiting the headquarters to inquire about her colleagues. Three days later, her body was found in a hut in Nganjuk, showing signs of severe torture and sexual violence. The murder case remains officially unsolved.
