Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) – The panel of judges at the Denpasar District Court, Bali, sentenced a Brazilian citizen to 18 years imprisonment after being found guilty of bringing 3 kilograms of cocaine into Bali.The verdict against the Brazilian citizen named Yuri Bezerra Da Costa (25) was read by Judge Ni Made Okti Mandiani in Denpasar on Thursday.”The judge sentences defendant Yuri Bezerra Da Costa to 18 years in prison, minus all time served in detention,” she said.The defendant was also fined Rp1 billion (US$57 thousand) or substituted with 190 days of imprisonment.The Denpasar District Court judge stated that Da Costa had been legally proven guilty of committing a narcotics crime as stipulated in Article 610 paragraph (2) letter a of 2026 concerning criminal adjustments, as stated in the first alternative charge.The judge found Da Costa guilty of bringing 3 kilograms of cocaine.The judge also stated that Da Costa's actions met the elements stipulated in Article 610 Paragraph (2) letter a of Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 1 of 2026 concerning Criminal Adjustments, as stated in the first alternative charge.The sentence and fine imposed on Da Costa are heavier than the demand by Public Prosecutor Ni Luh Wayan Adhi Antari of 16 years in prison and a Rp2 billion (US$115 thousand) fine, with a subsidiary sentence of six months’ imprisonment.During a search by Customs officers at Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali, Da Costa was found carrying a black plastic bag wrapped in transparent plastic containing cocaine.The examination revealed that the cocaine weighed 1,564.92 grams net (code A). Another black plastic bag containing the same substance, but with a different weight, was also found, at 1,524.44 grams net (code B).He reportedly transported the contraband from Rio de Janeiro to Dubai on Emirates Airlines flight EK 248, then from Dubai to Denpasar on the same airline.The prosecutor also presented evidence of Da Costa's crimes: a black plastic bag wrapped in transparent plastic containing a white powder containing cocaine weighing 1,564.92 grams net (code A). Another black plastic bag wrapped in transparent plastic containing a white powder containing cocaine weighing 1,524.44 grams net (code B).Other evidence included a silver suitcase marked 'Travelite' and a black backpack marked 'Samsonite.' Furthermore, an Emirates Airlines boarding pass with flight number EK 248 in the name of Yuri Bezerra Da Costa, traveling from Rio de Janeiro to Dubai. There was also a boarding pass from the same airline for the Dubai-Denpasar route.An Apple cellphone and US$670 in cash were also seized. These items were confiscated for the state.
