Indonesia eyes demographic bonus via family focus to meet 2026 goals

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Minister of Population and Family Development Wihaji underscored that investing in families is the foundation of the nation's priority programs.”President Prabowo's eight priority programs for 2026, such as food security, energy security, Free Nutritious Meal (MBG), quality education, quality healthcare, the people's economy, universal defense, and global investment—all lead back to the family,” he said in Jakarta on Thursday. He explained that his ministry is tasked with overseeing matters related to the entire human life cycle, which often intersect with the responsibilities of other ministries and agencies. To support this mandate, the Population Development Roadmap (PJPK) has been established as a framework for optimizing the demographic bonus.“Indonesia currently has a population of approximately 286 million, with nearly 80 million families recorded by name and address. While around 70 percent of the population is of working age, the key question is how many are truly productive,” he said.Wihaji emphasized that the demographic bonus will only become an advantage if the country can capitalize on it by investing in human capital and expanding employment opportunities. He also highlighted the importance of developing a comprehensive pension, social security, and old-age protection system that covers non-civil servants, informal workers, and housewives. The minister noted that his ministry currently records 14 million female-headed households, 10 million families with toddlers aged 24–59 months, and 46 million families with teenagersMeanwhile, there are 25 million families with older adults—a group that requires significant attention to face an aging population. He affirmed that the Ministry of Population and Family Development is strengthening services from upstream to downstream, including for toddlers, adolescents, and older adults.”We are also bolstering the family facilitator teams (TPKs) whose members reach 597,000 people across Indonesia,” he added.
