Indonesia promotes fish protein to strengthen food security

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia's National Food Agency (Bapanas) is pushing greater fish consumption to improve public nutrition and strengthen the country's food security.”From a national food perspective, we are encouraging the maintenance of fish supply availability and stability,” Hermawan, Director of Supervision of Food Safety and Quality Standards at Bapanas, said in a statement on Wednesday. He delivered the remarks while accompanying a working visit by Commission IV of the House of Representatives (DPR) to Gresik, East Java.Hermawan said fish is a high-quality protein source that should be promoted as part of efforts to diversify diets and reduce reliance on staple foods. Sustained fisheries production, he added, is essential to maintaining supply and stabilizing prices.Gresik is one of the country's key aquaculture hubs, with 28,600 hectares of ponds and more than 20,000 fish farmers. Aquaculture output in 2025 is projected at 160,439 tons, valued at Rp3.54 trillion (US$223 million), with milkfish as the leading commodity.Deputy Chairman of Commission IV Panggah Susanto said around 29,500 tons of fertilizer have been allocated nationally this year under a subsidy program to support fisheries cultivation.Gresik Regent Fandi Akhmad Yani welcomed the reinstatement of subsidized fertilizer, expressing optimism that pond productivity, particularly for milkfish, will recover.
