Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian government is accelerating the construction of permanent housing for disaster victims in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, with dozens of units targeted for completion before Eid al-Fitr in March.”We will make efforts to ensure several units are ready for residents by Eid,” Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas Maruarar Sirait said in a statement cited in Jakarta on Thursday.He urged governors and district heads to take proactive steps to support construction projects, including those carried out in collaboration with the Buddha Tzu Chi Foundation.According to data from the foundation, construction has begun on 468 of the 1,103 planned permanent housing units in North Sumatra. Of these, 50 units in Central Tapanuli and 20 in North Tapanuli are expected to be completed by March 15.In Aceh, 600 of the planned 1,000 units are under construction, including 40 in North Aceh targeted for completion by mid-March. In West Sumatra, work has started on 43 of the 500 planned units.The housing projects are part of the government's effort to accelerate post-disaster rehabilitation following floods and landslides that struck dozens of cities and districts in November 2025.The Government Communications Agency also reported progress in temporary housing development, including projects in Agusen Village, Gayo Lues District, Aceh, where soldiers have been assisting with construction.In West Sumatra, temporary housing at nine locations — across Padang City and the districts of Lima Puluh Kota, Agam, Padang Pariaman, Pesisir Selatan, and Tanah Datar — has been declared ready for occupancy. A temporary housing complex in Pesisir Selatan is 65 percent complete.In North Sumatra, construction of temporary and permanent housing units is ongoing, including projects in South Tapanuli District.
