Prabowo urges prevention of basic commodity price hikes during Ramadan

Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto has instructed Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan to keep the prices of basic commodities from increasing during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr.In this regard, Prabowo instructed Hasan to travel directly to various regions to inspect food availability and ensure that food and basic commodity prices remain affordable for the public.”Basic commodities during this Ramadan and Eid period must be available, affordable, and the prices must not rise,” Hasan said, outlining the President's instructions after a meeting in Jakarta on Monday.The minister also mentioned that during the meeting, President Prabowo ordered strict monitoring of food stocks.”We are ensuring that throughout Ramadan and up until Eid, food stocks must be strictly monitored,” he said.In addition to Hasan, the President also summoned Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia to discuss energy issues, particularly following the crisis in the Middle East.Lahadalia reported on the current energy situation after the Iranian authorities had closed the Strait of Hormuz indefinitely.The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime chokepoint in West Asia, particularly for oil-exporting countries targeting markets in Asia.In a statement on Monday, Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman highlighted that the stocks of key food commodities are safe and in surplus ahead of the 2026 Eid al-Fitr, ensuring stable food supplies and prices.He noted that the national rice stock has reached approximately 3.5 million tons and is projected to continue increasing in line with the peak harvest and a production trend that has risen by about 15 percent as of March.Other commodities, such as corn, also showed positive performance, with an availability of 10.751 million tons and demand of 5.899 million tons, resulting in a surplus of 4.852 million tons.
