Transportation infrastructure ready for 2026 Eid homecoming: Ministry

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi ensured that national transport infrastructure and services are ready for the Eid al-Fitr travel season, to ensure safe and comfortable journeys for the public during both the homecoming and return periods.“The government has made various preparations, covering land, sea, air, and ferry transport facilities and infrastructure,” he said here on Thursday. The Ministry has conducted safety inspections of all transport modes, offering economic stimulus through discounted air, sea, train, and ferry tickets, and organizing free homecoming programs.Additional measures include work-from-anywhere policies, traffic management schemes, provision of extra vehicles, and some restrictions for freight transport.Based on surveys of potential movements for the 2026 Eid transport, the estimated number of travelers is 50 to 60 percent of Indonesia’s population, or around 143.91 million people. This figure is down 1.75 percent from the 2025 survey estimate of 146 million people.“However, in reality, the number of travelers in 2025 reached 154 million, showing that public mobility during Eid tends to exceed survey estimates,” the minister explained. The ministry uses the digital-based operations for monitoring Eid al-Fitr transport, including transport nodes and network reporting, vehicle movement surveillance, drone live streaming, accident monitoring, and public complaints.Monitoring also covers weather and early warnings from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), as well as 7,159 CCTVs in cooperation with regional governments, state-owned enterprises, and the private sector. To ease traffic toward ferry ports, a layered buffer zone scheme has been prepared at Merak Port, with rest areas at KM 13, KM 43, and KM 63. Additional buffer zones are available at Merak, Indah Kiat, BBJ, Ciwandan ports, and several points in arterial roads to prevent congestion.
