Indonesia explores investment, tech ties with California

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia is exploring expanded cooperation with California in investment, technology, and clean energy to strengthen economic ties with the United States, officials said on Wednesday.The discussions were led by Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in San Francisco Yohpy Ichsan Wardana during meetings with California State Treasurer Fiona Ma and Chief Executive Officer of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) Marcie Frost at Wisma Indonesia.“Indonesia and California have complementary strengths—California in innovation, technology, and capital, and Indonesia in market scale, growth, and strategic positioning in Southeast Asia,” Yohpy said in a statement.A key focus was pension fund management and long-term investment, with Indonesia expressing interest in learning best practices from CalPERS, one of the largest pension fund managers in the United States.Fiona Ma highlighted the importance of strong governance in managing public funds, while Marcie Frost said pension system success depends not only on asset size but also on institutional discipline and long-term orientation.Both sides also discussed opportunities in clean energy and sustainable investment. Indonesia outlined its national energy transition priorities, while California signaled interest in deepening cooperation in green financing.In technology, including artificial intelligence, the Southeast Asian country emphasized its use to support development, such as improving productivity, resource management, and disaster mitigation, while ensuring responsible governance.Talks further covered collaboration in energy, minerals, and electric vehicles, including strengthening downstream processing of strategic commodities such as nickel, which plays a key role in the global battery ecosystem.In education and research, both parties agreed to enhance existing partnerships with universities in California to advance technological collaboration and applied research.The meeting underscored the importance of subnational diplomacy in building concrete, results-oriented international partnerships, as Indonesia seeks to expand global cooperation supporting its development agenda.California, one of the world’s largest economies, is seen as a strategic partner in Indonesia’s efforts to deepen engagement with the United States.Ties between California and Indonesia’s Special Region of Yogyakarta have been in place under a sister province arrangement since 1995.
