Indonesia welcomes US-Iran ceasefire, reopening of Strait of Hormuz

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia welcomed the two-week ceasefire deal between the US and Iran which includes a temporary reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said the move reflects the openness of the warring parties to pursue diplomacy.”Indonesia sees this momentum as a positive start and encourages optimal utilization of this opportunity to advance a sustainable peaceful resolution,” she said here on Wednesday.She emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy are the only ways to resolve the conflict in the Gulf region.Mewengkang continued that Indonesia’s contribution to easing tensions will be based specifically on this diplomatic approach.Indonesia will also continue to support constructive diplomatic efforts to achieve a more permanent resolution to the conflict.The spokesperson said these efforts must prioritize the interests of civil society to ensure a lasting peace.Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela said the ceasefire opens the opportunity for the normalization of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.”With this development, we hope it can develop into a more permanent conflict resolution and have a positive impact on our interests,” he stated.Mulachela noted that the ceasefire will benefit both freedom of navigation and future global maritime stability.He assessed that this development has implications not only for Indonesia but also for the Gulf region and the world.US President Donald Trump announced the two-week ceasefire and stated that the Strait of Hormuz would soon be opened for transit.Following the announcement, Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) confirmed that talks with the US would begin on Friday, April 10, in Islamabad, Pakistan.Iran also stated that its 10-point ceasefire proposal is viewed by the US as a basis for negotiations.
