TikTok sets 16 plus age limit in Indonesia under new rules

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Social media giant TikTok announced that it has adjusted the minimum age to access its platform in Indonesia to comply with the country's new regulation on child protection in digital platforms. As stated on TikTok's official website and confirmed on Tuesday, the new policy aligns with Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 regarding Electronic System Governance for Child Protection (PP Tunas).“We deeply respect the guidance from the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi), which stipulates that digital platforms, including TikTok, must clearly be intended for users aged 16 and older,” the company said in a statement. The change will affect all users under 16 years old—the minimum access age mandated by PP Tunas. The company added that it will issue notifications before enforcing the age restriction on affected accounts.“We will continue our self-assessment process in close collaboration with the Ministry, comply with age guidelines based on the results, and keep our community informed,” TikTok stated. The company is offering age verification and appeal mechanisms to all users above 16 years old who are mistakenly affected by the restriction, allowing them to restore access to their accounts.TikTok noted that it has more than 50 preset safety, privacy, and security settings automatically enabled to ensure users “can safely express their creativity, discover new interests, and learn on TikTok.”The platform also moderates all uploaded content in accordance with its community guidelines. It reported that 99.1 percent of content removed for violations was proactively taken down before being reported.“As we move forward, we will take the necessary steps in line with regulatory expectations while continuing to strengthen our safeguards and keep our Indonesian community informed as further guidance becomes available,” the company added.PP Tunas, which came into effect on March 28, 2026, restricts children’s access to digital platforms, including those categorized as high-risk, such as Instagram, Facebook, Threads, X, Bigo Live, YouTube, TikTok, and Roblox. With these adjustments, TikTok joins Instagram, Facebook, Threads, X, and Bigo Live as platforms that have fully complied with the regulation.Meanwhile, Roblox is considered partially compliant. Google, which operates YouTube, has yet to demonstrate a commitment to complying with the regulation.
