Prabowo’s trips seen key to Indonesia’s energy security

Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto’s recent visits to Russia and France are strategically important for safeguarding Indonesia’s energy security amid global geopolitical tensions, an economist said Thursday.Bhima Yudhistira, executive director of the Center of Economic and Law Studies (Celios), said engagement with Russia focused on securing oil supplies, while talks with France centered on defense ties and broader economic cooperation.“State utility PLN and sovereign wealth fund Danantara are expected to promptly follow up on renewable energy investments, which are highly relevant amid the global energy crisis,” he said.Yudhistira noted that Indonesia’s plan to import oil from Russia must be carefully assessed from a business perspective, including logistics costs, benchmark pricing and compatibility with domestic refinery specifications. He added that price comparisons with other suppliers, such as Azerbaijan, are essential to ensure cost efficiency and avoid overreliance on a single source. At the same time, he warned of potential risks linked to international commitments, including possible retaliation or sanctions tied to agreements requiring countries to limit cooperation with sanctioned entities. On France, Yudhistira said outcomes from the visit should prioritize boosting investment to accelerate Indonesia’s energy transition, particularly through stronger implementation of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).He said France offers technological advantages that could support Indonesia’s shift toward cleaner energy sources, including ocean wave energy, which is well suited to the country’s vast maritime territory. In addition, technologies such as smart grid-based solar systems and wind power are considered particularly relevant for eastern Indonesia, where energy access remains uneven.Yudhistira emphasized that timely execution of these initiatives will be crucial for reducing reliance on fossil fuels while strengthening long-term energy resilience. He urged PLN and Danantara to act quickly on potential partnerships and investment commitments resulting from the visits.“Accelerating renewable energy development is not only important for addressing the global crisis, but also for ensuring Indonesia’s energy independence,” he said.He added that coordinated policy support and investment clarity will be key to turning diplomatic engagements into tangible outcomes.
