President Prabowo calls for accelerated 100 GW solar power push

The goal is to reduce diesel-generated power by 10 gigawatts this year,Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto has called for the accelerated implementation of a 100-gigawatt (GW) solar power plant initiative, according to Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto. He stated that the president specifically requested that the program's execution be ramped up, particularly as a replacement for diesel-based power plants.”We were asked to report on the evaluation of several programs, specifically regarding the 100-gigawatt solar power program in coordination with Danantara,” Yuliarto said after a meeting with President Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday. He added that the government is optimistic about targeting the addition of 17 GW of renewable energy through solar power in the near future. The target encompasses both the expansion of solar power capacity and the reduction of diesel power plant usage.”The goal is to reduce diesel-generated power by 10 gigawatts this year,” he stated.Yuliarto further explained that the target is the result of a joint assessment involving the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, state-run electricity company PLN, sovereign wealth fund Danantara, and experts.Regarding technical implementation and site selection for the solar power plants, he stated that these tasks will be carried out by PLN as the program’s primary executor.Earlier, President Prabowo set a target to build 100 GW of solar power capacity within a relatively short period. This move serves as a strategic step to reduce reliance on fossil fuels while supporting the ambitious target of achieving 100 percent renewable energy for electricity within the next 10 years. On Tuesday, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources launched 1.3-GW rooftop solar power plants as part of efforts to accelerate the national energy transition. The initiative—carried out in collaboration with PT PLN and the Indonesian Solar Energy Association (AESI)—serves as the foundation for the national vision of developing 100 GW of solar power.
