Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Industry Ministry is strengthening the role of early adopters to boost the growth of the electric vehicle (EV) market in Indonesia. This strategy is considered crucial for creating stable demand and accelerating the development of the national EV industry from upstream to downstream, according to Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita.”The government is serious about developing a comprehensive national EV industry. We are not only encouraging production, but also sending a strong market signal by making the government an early adopter for domestically produced electric vehicles,” Agus said in his statement on Wednesday. The ministry recorded exponential growth in the battery-based electric motor vehicle (KBLBB) market in Indonesia, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 140 percent over the past five years.Based on the ministry’s data, the market share of EVs continues to increase. By 2025, the EV market share is expected to reach 21.71 percent, consisting of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) at 12.93 percent, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) at 8.13 percent, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) at 0.65 percent. In terms of production, the contribution of EVs to total national production also showed a positive trend, reaching 11.1 percent in 2025.He said this figure will continue to increase in 2026 as several new manufacturers participating in the completely built-up (CBU) EV incentive program begin operating.Furthermore, the strengthening of the national EV industry is also supported by an increasingly integrated ecosystem, from upstream to downstream industries.Indonesia, he said, already has an EV battery supply chain that encompasses the refining process, battery cell production, and recycling.”The government also continues to strengthen regulations to provide business certainty for industry players while encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles in the community,” Agus noted.According to him, collaboration between the government and the private sector is a key factor in accelerating the development of this industry.Global and national manufacturers have demonstrated their commitment to developing the EV ecosystem in Indonesia, including Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia, SGMW Motors Indonesia, and Industri Baterai Indonesia. The participation of these industries is clear evidence that Indonesia is increasingly trusted as a production base for EVs in the region, Agus emphasized. In line with this policy direction, the government is preparing to establish a company to produce national electric cars as part of strengthening the EV ecosystem. This step is expected to expand the market segment and accelerate the realization of the target of mass production of national EVs, which is targeted for launch in 2028.
