Japanese tourists can soon use QRIS for inbound transaction: BI

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Japanese tourists will soon be able to make inbound transactions in Indonesia using QR Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS), according to Bank Indonesia (BI) deputy governor Filianingsih Hendarta. She stated that BI has received permission from the Financial Services Agency (FSA) of Japan to implement this inbound Indonesia practice.”Permission has been granted by the FSA of Japan,” Hendarta remarked at the “Launch of the Industry Consultative Paper: Classification Framework Approach as the Foundation for Regulating Digital Financial Assets in Indonesia” in Jakarta on Wednesday.Indonesia and Japan officially began cross-border QRIS cooperation on August 17, 2025, allowing Indonesians and Japanese tourists to make cashless transactions via mobile phones. In addition to Japan, Indonesia has also launched a cross-border QR code-based payment system with South Korea on April 1, 2026. The system allows residents of both countries to make payments without exchanging currency, ensuring more efficient and lower-cost transactions. The practice of Indonesia outbound—where Indonesian tourists can shop abroad using QRIS—has so far already been implemented in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea.BI is currently working to expand QRIS use to other Asian countries, including China. The use of QRIS across borders further strengthens the expansion of this digital financial service, which has 60.77 million users as of February 2026.”QRIS expansion by February 2026 has reached more than 60 million users, 43 million merchants and 3.72 billion transactions,” Hendarta added.
