Indonesia accelerates 100 GW solar program amid US tariffs

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry (ESDM) is boosting the uptake of domestically produced solar panels to meet domestic demand, by accelerating the development of 100 GW of solar power plants (PLTS).Deputy Minister Yuliot made the statement in response to concerns over the impact of US-imposed import tariffs on Indonesian solar panel products, which could affect the domestic solar panel industry.“The President’s (Prabowo Subianto) directive is to accelerate the development of 100 GW of PLTS for domestic needs. So, this will be balanced,” Yuliot said in Jakarta on Friday.According to him, Indonesia is still assessing the volume of solar panel exports subject to US tariffs in order to estimate the potential impacts.Nevertheless, Yuliot said the 100 GW solar power program is expected to increase domestic demand for solar panels.“We are still finalizing the details. This program is being prioritized, with (the construction of) 17 GW first as the initial phase,” he explained. On Tuesday (February 24), the US Department of Commerce (USDOC) announced the imposition of temporary countervailing duties on imports of crystalline silicon photovoltaic cells, whether or not assembled into modules (solar panels), from several countries, including Indonesia. The tariffs imposed on Indonesia range from 85.99 to 143.30 percent. The anti-solar panel subsidy investigation will continue until a final decision is scheduled for July 2026.Compared to several other ASEAN countries, the tariffs imposed on Indonesia are lower.Malaysia is subject to tariffs of 14 percent to 168 percent, Vietnam 68 percent to 542 percent, Thailand 99 percent to 263 percent and Cambodia exceeding 3,400 percent.
