Indonesia targets 1,386 fishing villages by end-2026: Prabowo

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said his government is targeting the completion of 1,386 Red and White Fishing Villages across the country by December 2026.Speaking during a working visit to Miangas, Talaud Islands, North Sulawesi, on Saturday, the president said the program aims to improve fishermen's welfare.”By December 2026, we will inaugurate 1,386 fishing villages across Indonesia. Hopefully, a fishing village can soon be built here in Miangas,” he said.Prabowo emphasized that the fisheries sector has become one of the government's priorities this year.”We will improve the living conditions of fishermen across Indonesia on a large scale starting this year,” he said.He said the construction of fishing villages would be carried out quickly.During the visit, the government also handed over a 15 gross ton fishing boat with a crew capacity of around five people to local fishermen.Besides the boat, Prabowo said the government would build a dedicated fishing village equipped with modern facilities such as cold storage and fuel stations for fishermen.He emphasized that construction would begin this year and urged all parties to ensure the project is completed on schedule.The Red and White Fishing Village program is expected to strengthen the marine sector while supporting food security based on marine resources.The project is designed to create an integrated economic system covering fishing, storage, processing, and seafood marketing within a single ecosystem.At the Samber Binyeri pilot project site in Biak, Papua, fishermen's productivity increased from 5.35 tons to 10.85 tons annually per fisherman, marking a 101 percent rise.Days spent at sea also rose from nine to 13 days, an increase of 44 percent.
