Indonesia saves Rp50 Trillion through SOE restructuring

Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto said efficiency measures and restructuring carried out at state-owned enterprises (SOEs) had saved the government approximately Rp50 trillion (US$2.8 billion) in overhead costs as of 2026. “This is perhaps the largest corporate restructuring in the world. By streamlining the number of SOEs, we have saved approximately Rp50 trillion in overhead costs to date,” Prabowo said in Jakarta on Friday. He made the statement during the 2026 Annual Session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) and the Joint Session of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) and the Regional Representatives Council (DPD RI). “Just from the salaries of directors and commissioners, building rentals, car rentals, and official travel, we have already saved more than Rp50 trillion,” Prabowo said. The President said the government had successfully closed 290 of the 1,074 existing SOEs. According to Prabowo, the state-owned companies that were closed were not generating profits and were instead incurring losses. The President added that the government aims to reduce the number of SOEs to a maximum of 300 by the end of 2026. Prabowo emphasized that only productive SOEs capable of creating added value for the public would be retained. “We will close more than 750 SOEs. We will retain only those that are productive and create added value for the people,” Prabowo said. Through the streamlining, Prabowo said, Indonesia could achieve further savings in state funds, with total savings expected to reach Rp70 trillion (US$3.9 billion). The savings could be allocated to improving community health centers (Puskesmas) across Indonesia, renovating schools, and providing housing for citizens in need, Prabowo said. “Our target is that by December 31, 2026, we must save more than Rp70 trillion,” Prabowo said. “Just imagine what we could do with Rp50 trillion – how many health centers we could improve, how many schools we could renovate, and how many homes we could provide to the people,” he explained. On Friday, the MPR RI, DPR RI, and DPD RI held the MPR RI Annual Session and the Joint Session of the DPR RI and DPD RI. The annual sessions are state events marking the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia's independence and were held under the theme “A Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia.”
