Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Task Force for Accelerating Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction in Sumatra continues pushing the revitalization of schools affected by the deadly floods and landslides that struck Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra in November 2025.Task force spokesperson Amran said the government has accorded priority to restoring the education sector to safeguard children’s rights as their regions recover from the disasters.“We do have quite a high number of educational facilities affected. Therefore, we continue to accelerate development and rehabilitation processes,” he noted in a statement on Saturday.Amran explained that the government task force is revitalizing disaster-hit schools in stages, with intervention measures tailored to their level of damage, mentioning total reconstruction for facilities suffering severe impacts.“Those with heavy damage surely require reconstruction, making it impossible to reopen them right away. For this reason, we have relocated several schools to enable learning activities to proceed,” he pointed out.He added that the task force promotes cross-sector collaboration to carry out revitalization, with the Indonesian Army (TNI) involved in handling 267 severely damaged schools.Based on the task force’s data, the government has enabled all 4,922 affected educational facilities across the three provinces to resume operations as of May 8, though at varying levels of capacity. Some schools have fully recovered, while others continue operating from temporary classrooms or relocation sites. To date, a total of 3,002 schools have signed agreements on government intervention, with a budget worth Rp2.86 trillion (around US$164.5 billion) already prepared for assistance. The government has so far disbursed Rp1.9 trillion to aid 2,792 of the schools. In detail, revitalization work is underway for 2,012 schools in Aceh, 658 in North Sumatra, and 332 in West Sumatra.
