Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia has recorded a major milestone with new and renewable energy (NRE) hitting 17.89 percent of the country’s electricity mix as of April 2026, surpassing the government’s target of 16.46 percent.”The NRE mix has increased beyond the target,” Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry’s acting director general of electricity Tri Winarno stated during a meeting with House Commission XII in Jakarta, Thursday.Winarno told lawmakers, calling the development an encouraging indicator of the country's ongoing energy transition.However, he cautioned that fossil fuels still hold a firm grip on the grid.”(Energy transition efforts) still require acceleration to reduce the dominance of fossil fuels in the national electricity system,” he noted.Total national electricity production stood at 165.51 terawatt-hours (TWh) for the period reported. While green energy is gaining ground, coal remains the undisputed heavyweight of Indonesian power generation with 64.87 percent of the mix.Sumatra has emerged as the country’s green leader. Out of 32.42 TWh of electricity produced on the island, renewables account for a staggering 41.76 percent of the mix, successfully pushing coal into second place at 38.40 percent.Meanwhile, Java and Bali—which handle the lion's share of demand with 87.43 TWh—remain heavily fossil-reliant with coal generating 70.99 percent of their power and renewables hovering at just 10.01 percent.State-owned electricity company PT PLN echoed the ministry's optimism, unveiling an aggressive ten-year blueprint to systematically dismantle fossil fuel reliance.PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo confirmed that under the company's 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL), an overwhelming 76 percent of all new power generation capacity will come from clean sources.This equates to adding 52.8 gigawatts (GW) of solar, hydro, wind, and geothermal power, backed by advanced battery storage and pumped-storage hydropower.According to Prasodjo, the state utility is moving rapidly from planning to execution. In the first year since the roadmap's launch, PLN has already mobilized 43 percent (22.57 GW) of those targeted green projects into development, with 0.78 GW already fully operational.”Of the 52.8 GW, 43 percent of the renewable energy-based power plants are in the execution process.
