Jayawijaya, Highland Papua (ANTARA) – The Highland Papua Provincial Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Office has confirmed that the construction of the Jayapura-Wamena road section is still ongoing to improve transportation access and boost economic activity in the region.Head of the Highland Papua PUPR Office, Tunggul W. Panggabean, said in a written statement received here on Saturday that access to the Jayapura-Wamena road will continue to be developed in 2026.“Construction of approximately 50 kilometers of road is ongoing to help improve transportation and strengthen the economic activity in the Highland Papua region,” he said.According to him, the construction of the Jayapura-Wamena road is the responsibility and authority of the National Road Implementation Agency (BBPJN) XVIII Jayapura, Papua.“The work on this road has been ongoing for 15 years and is funded through a public-private partnership (PPP) scheme. Funding will continue to be available to support the acceleration of the national road development from Jayapura to Wamena,” he said.He explained that the contract for the 50-kilometer national road project will run for the next 15 years and began in 2024.“The Jayapura-Wamena road section is indeed the main economic nerve in the Highland Papua region, and it cannot be closed except in emergency situations such as road or bridge damage that makes it impassable,” he said.He added that the national road section is a hope for the Highland Papua provincial government and local governments across eight districts in reducing high prices and controlling inflation. The PPP funding scheme from Indonesia’s Ministry of Public Works is an alternative financing mechanism in which infrastructure provision for public use is fully or partially financed by private entities, rather than relying solely on the state budget (APBN).
