Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia said the government could reduced its oil imports from around 1 million barrels per day (bpd) to 700,000-750,000 bpd following the mandatory of B50 biodiesel programme.The B50 programme, which requires diesel fuel to contain 50 percent palm oil based biodiesel, has enabled Indonesia to cut its oil imports by about 250,000-300,000 bpd, Lahadalia told reporters here in Jakarta on Tuesday.”By converting to B50, we have been able to cut our oil imports by nearly 250,000 to 300,000 barrels per day,” Lahadalia said.Indonesia consumes approximately 1.6 million barrels of fuel per day, while domestic crude oil production stands at around 600,000-615,000 bpd, leaving the country relied on imports of around 1 million bpd to meet its domestic energy demand.The annual diesel consumption in the country is estimated at around 39 million kiloliters. The B50 mandate has reduced oil imports to around 700,000-750,000 bpd, down from the previous gap of about 1 million bpd.Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto announced earlier that Indonesia has begun phasing out diesel imports starting in July 2026, following the government's successful rollout of B50 diesel as part of its broader strategy to strengthen national energy independence.President Subianto said Indonesia is the first country in the world to commercially produce B50, a diesel fuel blend containing 50 percent palm oil-based biodiesel.According to the president, ending diesel imports would keep more spending within the domestic economy instead of paying for imported fuel.In addition to B50, the government has begun introducing E10 gasoline, a fuel blended with 10 percent ethanol, as an initial step toward broader bioethanol adoption.The government is also targeting an increase in the bioethanol blend to E20 and plans to accelerate the construction of new bioethanol plants, as Indonesia currently has only one bioethanol production facility.
