Open trip sales mission to bolster domestic travel: Tourism Ministry

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia's Tourism Ministry launched a domestic tourism sales mission to strengthen the country's tourism ecosystem and encourage more Indonesians to travel locally through affordable, flexible open-trip packages.“The initiative gives the tourism industry an opportunity to offer affordable, diverse and competitive travel products,” Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said Saturday. The event, held in Yogyakarta on Thursday, brought together tourism businesses and prospective buyers in a business forum to expand partnerships and generate commercial transactions.Wardhana said the program serves as a pilot project to strengthen the domestic tourism market through open-trip travel packages. She said open trips offer flexible itineraries, routes, facilities and prices set by organizers, making travel more accessible to a broader range of consumers. The model can also be tailored for schools, universities, communities, government agencies, banks and companies organizing outings, gatherings and study tours.Statistics Indonesia data showed domestic tourist trips reached 1.20 billion in 2025, up 17.53 percent from the previous year. From January through May 2026, domestic trips totaled 523.22 million, rising 2.86 percent from the same period a year earlier. In May alone, domestic trips reached 106.16 million, increasing 8.83 percent from April and 8.69 percent from May 2025.Deputy Assistant for Domestic Tourism Marketing Erwita Dianti said the Yogyakarta sales mission involved 16 sellers and 45 prospective buyers in a table-top business meeting.“The table-rotation format encourages intensive discussions that can generate sustainable business partnerships, expand domestic tourism offerings and strengthen the industry's competitiveness,” Dianti said.
