Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia urged the UN Security Council (UNSC) to strengthen conflict prevention and make regional organizations key partners in maintaining international peace.Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir made the call Thursday during a council open debate on peaceful dispute settlement at UN headquarters in New York.The council too often acts only after tensions escalate, meaning its available tools are used more to respond to conflicts than prevent them, Nasir was quoted as saying in a statement released by Indonesia's Foreign Ministry.Nasir stressed the importance of dialogue, mediation, peacekeeping and post-conflict recovery as interconnected, continuous processes for sustaining peace.He also called for women and young people to participate meaningfully as partners in peacebuilding.Indonesia underscored the role of regional organizations as a first line of defense against conflict.Drawing on its ASEAN experience, Nasir said regional mechanisms can build trust, promote dialogue and ease tensions before they escalate into open conflict.“The ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific shows how practical cooperation in maritime affairs, connectivity and the economy can build trust amid regional geopolitical dynamics,” he said.Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful dispute settlement, including through its accession to the 1907 Hague Convention for the Pacific Settlement of International Disputes, he said.“The success of multilateralism is measured not only by the wars we end, but also by those that never occur because we prevent them,” Nasir said.The debate was organized by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which holds the council presidency in July 2026.The meeting followed adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2788 (2025), which emphasizes peaceful dispute settlement and conflict prevention.The session was chaired by Congolese Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner and attended by UN Secretary-General António Guterres as a briefer, alongside more than 80 UN member states.Nasir also delivered Indonesia's national statement at a July 22 council open debate on natural-resource governance to promote global peace and prosperity.Indonesia's active participation reaffirmed its commitment to effective multilateralism, the UN Charter and international law, while prioritizing early, peaceful conflict prevention.
